Two fins on a surfboard

Postby mattv » Wed May 19, 2010 12:45 am

I have seen some vids of riders with only 2 fins on their surfboard vice the normal 3 or 4. I assume this gives the surfboard a loose feel and helps slide the back around for tricks.

I have a quad fish that I love as it flies upwind so well but the quad fins also bite too hard and make tricks more difficult. I have been thinking of taking off the 2 back fins for days when I do not need to go upwind so fast.

Anyone else riding with 2 fins?

I ride my shortboard with just two fins quite a lot. Super easy to slide out in top turns but sometimes a little too easy and difficult to get back in control. On my Uber Fish I use a little GX trailer fin. Two fins was too loose and three fins to much bite. It's also much easier to learn to tack with two fins.

Riding with two fins here (see my topic on the airush choptop), really loose with two fins. Haven't noticed that getting upwind is more difficult but have noticed that keeping a straight course requires more effort which is made worse with chop. Less directional stability, which makes sense, but as a result the board is faster and turns on a dime. Really fun to throw around in the onshore slop I usually get, I plan to use it this way for a long time.
